The recognition of this receptor by coronaviruses is an important factor that can determine the ability of the virus to infect, increase its pathogenesis, and attack a cell.

Interestingly, the expression of this receptor among mammals is not all the same. Scientists are currently investigating if drugs that lower expression of ACE2 can make our cells more resistant to viruses.
